Unity VFX Troubleshooting

Solutions to the most common problems with ERIC VFX Studio effect packs. Most of them also apply to Unity particle effects in general, whichever pack or asset you are using.

ISSUE 1

Effect doesn’t show over or in front of my UI

SYMPTOM
The particle effect is in the scene, but it is hidden behind the UI or doesn’t appear on top of it.
CAUSE
Particle effects are rendered by a camera; they are not part of the UI system. When a Canvas is set to Screen Space – Overlay, it is drawn over everything else and covers the particles the camera renders.
FIX
  1. Change the Canvas Render Mode to Screen Space – Camera or World Space.
  2. Or render the effects with a separate camera that draws after the UI camera, so the effects appear on top. This only works when the Canvas is set to Screen Space – Camera (a Screen Space – Overlay Canvas always draws above everything). In URP, add the effects camera to the UI camera’s Camera Stack as an Overlay camera.

ISSUE 2

Glow or Bloom looks different from the demo, or doesn’t appear

SYMPTOM
The effect looks flat, the glow is missing, or the glow looks different from the demo video.
CAUSE
Bloom is a post-processing setting of your project; it is not included in the effect files. Bloom also looks very different in URP, HDRP, and the Built-in Render Pipeline. In HDRP, high Bloom intensity tends to look hazy rather than producing a clean glow.
FIX
  1. Check which render pipeline your project uses (URP, HDRP, or Built-in).
  2. Make sure Bloom post-processing is enabled in the scene.
    • URP: add a Volume (GameObject > Volume > Global Volume), assign a Volume Profile, choose Add Override > Post-processing > Bloom, and enable Post Processing on the Camera. Also make sure HDR is enabled in the URP Asset; otherwise bright colors are clipped and the glow looks weak.
    • HDRP: add a Global Volume with a Volume Profile and choose Add Override > Post-processing > Bloom.
    • Built-in: install the Post Processing package from the Package Manager, add a Post-process Layer to the camera and a global Post-process Volume with a profile, then add the Bloom effect to the profile.
  3. Adjust the Bloom Threshold and Scatter (in the Built-in Post Processing package, the equivalent settings are Threshold and Diffusion).

ISSUE 3

Pink or magenta materials, or missing shaders after import

SYMPTOM
After importing the pack, the effects or materials show up pink or magenta, or shaders are missing.
CAUSE
The most common causes are a render pipeline mismatch (for example, importing the URP version into a Built-in project) or importing an older version of the package.
FIX
  1. Make sure the version you imported matches your project’s render pipeline.
  2. Delete the old effect folder, then re-import the latest version.
  3. If shaders are still missing, contact us with your Unity version and render pipeline, and we will send you the latest tested files.

ISSUE 4

Shader errors or duplicate GUID conflicts after importing or updating

SYMPTOM
Shader errors or duplicate GUID warnings appear after importing or updating a pack.
CAUSE
This usually happens when files from an old version and a new version exist in the project at the same time. It occurs more often between Unity 2023 or Unity 6 and older Built-in projects.
FIX
  1. Delete the old files, then re-import the pack.
  2. If the problem continues, contact us with your Unity version, render pipeline, and the error message.

ISSUE 5

Refunds, or I bought the wrong pack

SYMPTOM
You bought the wrong pack or would like a refund.
CAUSE
Refunds for purchases made on a marketplace are handled by that marketplace, so we cannot issue refunds directly.
FIX
  1. Unity Asset Store: open the profile menu in the top-right corner, go to Order History, and request a refund there.
  2. For purchases on other stores (BOOTH, JINXXY, Fab, Gumroad, itch.io, etc.), refunds follow each store’s own refund policy. Please check your order page or contact the store’s support.
